Lanjarón, in the Granada Alpujarra is known for the variety of its walks characterised by the beauty of the local flora and fauna. There are outstanding beauty spots such as the "Huerta de las Monjas" or garden of the nuns, the "Tello" (part of the Sierra Nevada National park), the "Tajo Colorado" or red peak or the "Tajo de la Cruz" a name derived from the wooden cross which, according to legend was erected to scare off the witches who practised rites on the site.

 

Many of these places are visited yearly by the local inhabitants as part of the traditional celebrations.For example, the procession on the 15th May to the small chapel on the "Tajo de la Cruz".In all of these events the local people known as "Ca ñ oneros" (a name derived from the Ca ñ on or cannon which can be seen at the entrance to the town) are accustomed to have a picnic.

Given its location, its history and its traditions, Lanjar ó n finds itself immersed in an expression of the old way of life, in which its old districts, its natural walks, its beauty spots and its people all play an important part.
